Newark Preparatory Charter School is one of Newark’s newest and most innovative public charter schools. With its inspirational and individualized “blended learning” approach, Newark Prep provides a unique 21st-century education option for the students and families of Newark. Approved by the New Jersey Department of Education to serve students in grades 9–12, Newark Prep will initially serve ninth grade for the 2012–2013 school year and expand to offer additional grades in subsequent academic years.
What Is Blended Learning?
“Blended learning” combines the best of online learning with traditional, face-to-face instruction. Students benefit from a flexible and individualized education that features on-site and online support from educators who carefully track progress and provide the real-time guidance students need to succeed.
How it Works
Newark Prep turns the typical school environment on its head. Rather than a “one size fits all” program of periods and bells, Newark Prep offers students flexible block scheduling and engaging project-based learning activities that make the most of their personal peak learning times. Students report in person to the school facility to meet with their New Jersey-certified teachers and collaborate with their peers on a flexible schedule that includes evening hours. Students can also work on their courses anytime and anywhere there is an Internet connection. Through good attendance and performance, students can also “earn” the right to more flexible hours outside the school building. Everything the students need to be successful in the program is provided at the school, including dedicated computer work stations for the online component of the instruction, as well textbooks, novels, science equipment, and more.
Rather than rows of forward-facing desks and teacher lectures, Newark Prep provides multiple subject-specific labs where students and teachers meet in small groups and one-on-one, depending on students’ needs. Students who need more intensive intervention and direct instruction will get it, while students who are ready to move ahead can do so. All students have access to the online and face-to-face tutoring services that put expert teaching help at their fingertips exactly when they need it.
At the heart of Newark Prep is the common area where students can work on their courses, collaborate on team projects, and socialize with their friends. The common area is open throughout the entire extended school day for any Newark Prep student who wants a safe, friendly place to study.
